Join Sam Jones, the Monticello Wine Trail, and Hardware Hills Vineyard for a conversation about UVA creative writing professor Kevin Moffett’s latest novel, Only Son, paired with Hardware Hills’ Temperance Bridge, a full-bodied Chambourcin blended with port-style red for a slightly sweet finish.

Long-listed for the National Book Award, Only Son is a powerful meditation on grief, fatherhood, and the ways our relationships with our parents shape who we become. Told in three parts, the novel follows its unnamed narrator from childhood through middle age after losing his father at a young age. Years later, he discovers his father’s old travel journal and sets out to retrace the journey with his own teenage son.

Despite its weighty themes, Moffett brings an irreverent sense of humor and surprising lightness to the story—making it a fitting match for a wine that balances depth with a touch of sweetness.
