Michael Shaps wines are small production wines made from grapes grown under Michael’s supervision. Michael has a reputation for quality that ranks on an international scale with some of the world’s best winemakers.
The whites focus on varietal intensity and the retention of natural acidity.
The reds are highly extracted and crafted to be age-worthy and require cellaring.
Michael strongly believes in choosing grape varieties that represent the potential of Virginia viticulture. Michael’s wines prove that Virginia can produce wines that compete head to head with some of the finest wines from the best regions in the wine world.
Winemaker Jake Busching joined the Wineworks team in July 2015 with a wealth of experience and an outstanding reputation in the Virginia wine industry. Growing up on a Midwestern farm prepared Jake for the agricultural aspects of the wine industry and learning the trade from Michael and viticulturist Chris Hill launched him on a path of high-end Virginia viticulture and winemaking. Jake believes in soil-to-bottle wine growing and has brought that focus to bear at wineries like Keswick Vineyards, Pollak Vineyards, Grace Estate Winery, and now Michael Shaps Wineworks. Jake sits on the board of the Monticello Wine Trail and serves on the Research and Education Committee for the Virginia Vineyards Association as well.
