Glass House Winery

Glass House Winery is a boutique artisanal winery with a tropical flair. The winery is located in Free Union, Virginia, which is just outside of Charlottesville and at the base of the Blue Ridge. The winery became a vision as owners, Jeff and Michelle Sanders, were searching for a way to marry Jeff’s botanical skills with Michelle’s love of creating unique chocolates. At that time they discovered Virginia’s promising wine industry, decided it was a perfect match and Glass House winery was born.

Glass House is now a truly one-of-a-kind winery. Offering estate wines, blends, a very unique chocolate wine and their own brand of handmade chocolates by Michelle.

The attached temperature controlled glass conservatory is the perfect place to relax among vibrant tropical foliage and enjoy both wine and chocolates year-round.

Seating options include the tropical conservatory, deck overlooking the lake and Buck Mountain, and picnic tables along the lake and on the floating dock.

Winemaking Philosophy:
The artisan wines are crafted solely from grapes grown on the property and in the region. From 2014 on, the winery is making only estate wines (wines from the winery property). They have chosen grape varietals that bring out the best of the local terroir. There are currently 12 acres under vine and these grapes are cultivated with meticulous care, while striving to treat the Earth as respectfully and gently as possible in the process.

Glass House is organized as a destination winery, meaning guests are encouraged to spend time at the winery, bring picnics or have food from the occasional food trucks. To meet all the guests’ tastes, Glass House tries to have wines in a variety of styles. While most are dry European style wines with minimal intervention, Glass House also offers an off-dry white, and has one or two bigger, new world style wines.

In keeping with its glass conservatory and modern vibe, Glass House is the only winery in Virginia to use Vino Seals for its closure on all wines, a glass “cork” that allows no oxygen movement into the wine.
