Established in 1976 by Gianni Zonin, whose family has been producing wines throughout Italy since 1821, Barboursville Vineyards is dedicated to growing estate-bottled wines of European heritage which merit comparison with the finest wines of their kind, grown anywhere in the world.
Occupying the estate of James Barbour, Virginia’s Governor during the War of 1812, Barboursville is a welcoming destination for its array of superb vintages, its casually elegant Palladio Restaurant, its 1804 Inn and Vineyard Cottages, and for its historic landmark plantation Ruins of the mansion Thomas Jefferson designed for Governor Barbour, within a serene private park.
Situated on the broad, rolling plateau and foothills of the Southwest Mountains in the Virginia Piedmont, running parallel with the Blue Ridge to the west, our 900 acres occupy soils of varying mixes of clay and alluvial calcareous deposits, with sloping exposures of even greater variety. In the temperate mid-Atlantic weather of our growing region, this estate presents the viticulturist with a dynamic mosaic of growing conditions. Some years favor one planting site for a given varietal, such as Cabernet Franc, and other years favor another in the same varietal. The resulting engagement with the vines is exceptionally active and verifies the truism that the human hand, learned, seasoned, and schooled by many previous vintages, must be incorporated in any conception of “terroir.”

Main Tasting Room Hours: Monday – Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 11am-5pm
Tasting fee: $7/person for tasting of current vintages. Winery tours are free and run hourly on weekend days.
Library 1821 Tasting Hours: Saturday 11 am-5 pm, Sunday 11 am-5 pm
Seated tasting of 6 wines for $20.00, older rare vintages and food pairings available for an additional fee.
