Michael Shaps Wineworks
Founded in 2007, Michael Shaps Wineworks produces award-winning wines in an old-world style for the Michael Shaps label, as well as for several prestigious wineries throughout the state. Michael introduced the first "bag-in-box" wines to Virginia wine consumers, which are available for purchase, in addition to wine in kegs. We are a working winery nestled in the woods south of Charlottesville, and are devoted to the passion of winemaking. Our tasting room offers a Virginia tasting list, as well as a French tasting list consisting of Michael Shaps' imported wines from Burgundy.
Wineworks Extended is a new tasting room experience close to downtown Charlottesvile. This "warehouse" site is an extension of the Michael Shaps winery, where the wine comes to be bottled and stored. This location is known for wine on tap and the Wineworks box wine. Wineworks Extended also features both the Michael Shaps Virginia and Maison Shaps Burgundy wines.
At Michael Shaps Winery and the Wineworks Extended warehouse, visitors glimpse a view into a multi-faceted winery operation where the focus is on quality production with a rustic, industrial feel.

Winemaking Philosophy:
Michael Shaps wines are small production wines made from grapes grown under Michael’s supervision. Michael has a reputation for quality that ranks on an international scale with some of the world’s best winemakers.
The whites focus on varietal intensity and the retention of natural acidity.
The reds are highly extracted and crafted to be age-worthy and require cellaring.
Michael strongly believes in choosing grape varieties that represent the potential of Virginia viticulture. Michael’s wines prove that Virginia can produce wines that compete head to head with some of the finest wines from the best regions in the wine world.

Tasting Room Open Daily: 11 am- 5 pm
Tasting fee:
$10/person and includes complimentary stemless glass. Tastings are complimentary for Wine Club Members plus one additional guest. Flights at Wineworks Extended are $8-10/flight.

Event Policies:
Public: On occasion: special vertical, library and Burgundy wine tastings.
Private: Wineworks Extended (on Avon St. Ext. near Downtown Charlottesville) We have an event space that can be rented for special occasions. The event space can accommodate 50 people and has a private catering kitchen.
Food Available:
Cheese & Baguettes are sold in the Tasting Room.
Outside food is also permitted.
Pet Policy:
Leashed dogs allowed outside of tasting room. The Wineworks Extended location does not permit dogs.
